Guat Shoes began life at 221 School Road in 1978, inspired by a pair of hand crafted sandals purchased during travels to Guatemala, the name being an abbreviation of the country of origin. The shop at 221 School Road became a cobblers after it’s construction in the 1890’s. It’s a real pleasure to now be making shoes from a building with this history.
Since it’s founding in 1978 the style of Guat Shoes has developed and grown, but we have always kept strong core values. We source finest quality materials, produce long lasting footwear, make responsible, ethical businesses decisions to care for our environment, and serve our community with great quality and an honest service.
40 Years on, the business continues to evolve. It’s owner and creative maker Kenneth is committed to keeping it small and a personal, tailored experience. Each pair is still handmade by a single craftsperson, seeing your shoes through from flat material to final finishing. We take such care and pride in what we do, we have attracted a faithful following, and it is not uncommon for us to be repairing shoes which were made over 20 years ago. We are excited to continue to develop our styles as well as our community, so keep in touch and say hello, we’d love to talk.
